What Is Gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis, also called ‘delayed gastric emptying’ is a condition characterized by partial paralysis of the stomach, which prevents food from being digested properly. Food moves too slowly through the digestive tract causing nausea & vomiting, a feeling of stomach fullness after only a few bites of food, heartburn, loss of appetite, malnutrition and weight loss.

What Causes Gastroparesis?

Diabetes is the most common cause of gastroparesis. However, infections, autoimmune conditions, connective tissue disorders (scleroderma), neuromuscular conditions, cancer, chemotherapy and/or radiation can cause this medical condition. This condition can also be caused by gastrointestinal surgery where the vagus nerve is damaged. In a healthy person, the vagus nerve is responsible for the sensory and motor responses of the intestine.
