4 Reasons Your Hair Might Be Falling Out When it Shouldn’t

When your hair is falling out for mysterious reasons, the last thing you want to hear is, “it’s all in your head”. No, it’s not. It’s coming out of your head and freaking you out! Understandable. Find out what causes mysterious hair loss and what you can do about it.

Gluten Intolerance

I put this cause of mysterious hair loss first because it happened to me. About ten years ago, I was getting my hair cut when my stylist told me my hair was falling out in clumps.

A naturopath told me he thought my mysterious hair loss and other symptoms were due to gluten intolerance. He was right. Though I was eating everyday, I was suffering from malnutrition!

Symptoms of gluten intolerance include:

• Stomach pain

• Abdominal cramping

• Excessive gas

• Diarrhea

•  Weight loss

• Fatigue

• Hair loss

When the intestines are chronically inflamed due to the body’s autoimmune response, the body has trouble absorbing nutrients from any food, which can lead to nutritional deficiency and hair loss.

If you suspect gluten intolerance is causing your mysterious hair loss, cut it from your diet for one month to see if symptoms improve.

Gluten intolerance may also cause lasting nutritional deficiencies that can be addressed with supplements. Even after you’ve cut gluten from your diet permanently, you’ll need to spend time helping your body heal with nutrients. Visit with a naturopath or nutritionist for guidance on how to do this.

Underlying Disease

Another common cause of mysterious hair loss is underlying disease.

Common diseases that cause loss of hair are:

Thyroid Disease

• Lupus

• Diabetes

• Anemia

If you have other mystery symptoms besides strange hair loss, make an appointment with your doctor to get a full evaluation and blood work. Remember, hair loss isn’t a disease in and of itself but can act as a warning that something is amiss in your body.

Stress

According to Mayo Clinic psychiatrist, Dr. Daniel K. Hall-Flavin, stress can be a major factor in mysterious hair loss.

The most common stress-related hair loss conditions are:

Alopecia Areata – In this condition, the white blood cells attack the hair follicle, causing hair to fall out rapidly.

Telogen Effluvium – When your body experiences an extreme amount of physical or emotional stress, it can throw a large number of growing hairs into the telogen or resting phase, which will cause hair to fall out in large clumps when washed or brushed.

Trichotillomania – This is a nervous condition whereby the sufferer feels an uncontrollable urge to pull out their own hair, eyelashes and eyebrows. It is often a way to deal with anger, frustration or anxiety.

If you feel severe stress is a factor in causing your mysterious hair loss, visiting with a private therapist or joining a support group can help you get through hard times.

If at any time you feel like harming yourself, call a suicide crisis hotline immediately.

Harsh Hair Chemicals

If none of the above reasons for mysterious hair loss seem to apply to you, take a look at your hair care products.

90% of commercial shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, gels and hair coloring products contain harsh chemicals that may cause your hair to fall out and can cause other serious health problems.

Though there is no scientific data on the subject, the ingredient sodium laurel sulfate, has been thought to contribute to hair loss by deadening exposed hair follicles.

If you suspect harsh chemicals are causing your mysterious hair loss, become a label reader and trade them in for organic hair care products. You may be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Your mysterious hair loss might be caused by food intolerance, undiagnosed disease, stress or harsh hair chemicals. Once you get to the root of the problem, your body will heal and your hair should begin to grow back.
