If you’re living with a stomach ulcer, chances are you’re fighting it with antacids. Though they may help temporarily relieve the symptoms, they do nothing to treat the underlying condition. Learn how to treat a stomach ulcer naturally and get back to a pain-free life!

What is a Stomach Ulcer?

A stomach ulcer is a small hole in the digestive tract. Stomach ulcers fall into two common categories: Duodenal and gastric. A duodenal ulcer occurs in the small intestine and a gastric ulcer occurs in the stomach. Stomach ulcers can range anywhere from 1/8th of an inch to ¾ of an inch.

What Causes Stomach Ulcers

The most common causes of stomach ulcers are:

  • Cigarette Smoking
  • Excessive Use of NSAIDs
  • Helicobacter Pylori
  • Stress
  • Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Dietary Changes

When you have a peptic ulcer, it’s important to make a few dietary changes. Cut down on caffeine, alcohol, chili peppers, chocolate, tomatoes, and certain spices such as ginger, garlic, cinnamon and cloves. Increase your intake of high-fiber foods such as cooked dried beans and vegetables and fruits with peels.

Also, instead of eating 3 large meals a day, eat 5 smaller ones. This will make it easier on your digestive system.

Raw Cabbage Juice

Fresh cabbage juice has been reported to work miracles in the treatment of chronic stomach problems, including stomach ulcers. Raw cabbage juice contains glutamine and S-methylmethionine, two compounds with anti-ulcer properties. Raw cabbage juice is also a natural source of probiotics; friendly bacteria that are beneficial to healing and regulating your digestive system.

Manuka Honey

Manuka honey is a medicinal honey native toNew Zealand. This healing honey contains a powerful active ingredient that is reported to successfully treat peptic ulcer. The honey works by coating the stomach and protecting it while treating the most common cause of peptic ulcer: Helicobacter Pylori. Manuka honey also eases the symptoms of stomach ulcer by providing inflammation relief.

Probiotics

Probiotics are the friendly bacteria that occur naturally in the gut. Though adding a probiotic supplement to your diet cannot cure a stomach ulcer on its own, it can aid in the healing process. It can also inhibit the growth of helicobacter pylori and boost the immune system.

Aloe Vera Juice

One study suggests Aloe vera juice can help heal peptic ulcer. Aloe vera juice also provides a protective barrier to the stomach lining and helps heal the ulcer naturally.

Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root is considered a demulcent, which means it soothes irritated and inflamed mucus membranes. Drinking an infusion or tea of marshmallow root soothes inflammation and helps promote wound healing.

Slippery Elm

Slippery elm is another demulcent that works to soothe irritated intestinal tissue and help the body heal naturally. It’s also rich in antioxidants, which can fight the bacteria that cause peptic ulcer. Slippery elm can be taken as an infusion or tea.

If you’re living with the pain and discomfort of stomach ulcers, you don’t have to spend your life on antibiotics and antacids. A few dietary changes and some natural remedies can have you well on your way to better health!
