10 Ways that Sugar Can Ruin Your Health

Posted by admin on April 12, 2012 in Guest Posts with 2 Comments

Sugar is a sweet treat that makes many dishes taste delicious. It is literally the icing on the cake. Cookies, pies, ice cream and cakes are all decadent desserts that we look forward to after a meal, to celebrate a birthday, or to reward ourselves after a hard workout.

But these confections aren’t the only dishes on the menu with so much sugar in them. Sugar lurks in most of the items that we drink and eat — everything from salad dressings to soups to breads and even deli meats.

All this hidden sugar isn’t just sweetening our palates — it’s actually slowly ruining our health. Here are 10 ways that sugar can ruin your health:

It Can Cause Weight Gain

Too much sugar consumption can impair your body’s ability to properly regulate insulin, leading you to store more of your calories as fat. Insulin resistance can also make it more difficult for you to lose weight, as well as leading to a number of other health problems.

It Can Contribute to Diabetes

When your body becomes unable to properly regulate insulin, you can develop diabetes. When your body does not respond appropriately to sugar, high levels of insulin can accumulate in your blood stream, leading to this incurable disease.

It Can Contribute to Infertility

Sugar is a known hormone wrecker. Excess sugar consumption can lead to an imbalance of your reproductive hormones, such as an overproduction of estrogen or an underproduction of progesterone, which can make it difficult or impossible for your body to sustain a pregnancy.

It Can Weaken Your Immune System

Studies have shown that eating too much sugar can weaken your body’s immune system, making you more susceptible to illness. Not only do you become more vulnerable to common illnesses like the flu, but you can also be at risk of developing much more serious or chronic health conditions.

It Can Damage Your Liver

Your liver aids metabolic processes in your body, and too much sugar can interfere with these processes. The result can be an increased amount of fat in your body and your liver, leading to fatty liver disease.

It Can Impair Digestion

Sugar has been shown to create an acidic digestive tract and to impair the digestive system. Issues such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and other digestive problems can all be linked to excess consumption of sugar.

It Can Cause Depression

Sugar impairs mood. Because of its mood-altering capabilities and its influence on hormones, sugar can lead to severe depression and anxiety. Alternatively, eliminating sugar from the diet is one of the many natural ways to treat depression and other mood disorders.

It Can Lead to Osteoporosis

Sugar’s destructive properties extend even to the bones. Too much sugar intake can lead to weakened bones and even osteoporosis. Age is not a factor in developing this side effect.

It Can Cause Premature Aging

A cupcake may look pretty, but it won’t help you look pretty. Sugar can damage skin cells and impair tissue elasticity, leading to wrinkles and other signs of premature aging.

It Can Cause Cancer

Because of its tissue-damaging properties, its influence on hormones, its detrimental effect on digestion, and much more, sugar can lead to the development of many types of cancers. Sugar consumption can create the environment for cancer to develop, and it can feed cancer cells to help them grow more rapidly.

These are just a few of the many, many ways that sugar can ruin your health.  For an idea of the other destructive qualities of sugar, take a look at this list (http://nancyappleton.com/141-reasons-sugar-ruins-your-health/) from Dr. Nancy Appleton.

Thanks for the tips. We need a follow up post about the top ten foods that sugar hide in. At least with a dessert you know what your getting into. But sandwich meat…really. Geeze they are putting it in just about anything these days.

Sounds like a great idea. Yeah, there are certain things I don’t see the point in having sugar in them. It’s the same with gluten. People offer me Pringle’s potato chips and I say, “I can’t eat that”. “Why?” “It’s got wheat in it.” “Seriously?”

What ever happened to real food?

Thanks for the comment. If you’d like to do a guest blog on my site, let me know.
