I Told You I Was Sick

How Tea Tree Oil Saved My Toes

Let me begin by saying that I used to suffer from terrible nail fungus. I had all the classic (and gross!) symptoms: discolored, thickened, flaking nails that I didn’t want to show anybody. That’s the reason I got involved with trying to help educate people about nail fungus. I used to play a lot of sports back in college. My wet, dark, sweaty socks, coupled with the generally unclean conditions of the gym locker rooms I frequented probably had something to do with it. Toenail fungus loves dark, wet, warm conditions, so in some ways I think I handed my feet to nail fungus on a silver platter.

I could have done more to keep my feet dry and clean. I should have been more diligent about washing my feet and changing my socks. The fact is that when I got finished with college my nail fungus was out of control. What should have been prime time for me at the beach and socializing casually became an anxious nightmare. All I could think about was hiding my feet so no one would see my nails.

I struggled with that shame for a while, but the fungus was just getting worse. I didn’t really know what to do about it, so I asked someone I really trust: my mom. I’m lucky because my mother is a naturopathic doctor. When I got over the shame and finally showed her my fungal nails, she already knew that the best option for a nail fungus cure was undecylinic acid, a natural fungicide that’s made from castor oil. Once I did a little bit of research, I saw that it had a long history of being used to treat fungal and skin disorders and a great track record as a fungicide.

Needless to say, the acid alone didn’t really do anything for my nail fungus. I experienced a bit of an improvement when it came to the discoloration, but my nails were still thick and flaky. It seemed like all that happened was the visible fungus was less noticable, but the infection was still really bad. It turns out that undecylinic acid can’t get underneath the fungal nail and penetrate the nai lbed without tea tree oil. What tea tree oil does is this: aside from being a potent anti-bacterial and anti-fungal treatment all on its own, it softens the nail bed and the skin around the nail to help the undecylinic acid get in.

Applying these two treatments separately became a huge time waster for me, especially because I had to get into the habit of doing it two or three times a day to get any results. More severe nail fungus conditions can take months to treat. That’s when I took a look at the existing topical nail fungus treatments available on the market and tried to figure out which was the best one for curing nail fungus. I started looking online to find out the different nail fungus treatments to see if I could just buy one over the counter. Fortunately, I did find a lot of good information on topical treatments, and I never had to roll the dice with surgery or prescriptions. My survey of the different products available ended up being the beginning of our site’s reviews. Along with my colleagues, we eventually produced a definitive toenail fungus product comparison that explains exactly what product you should be using for your nail fungus and why.

I would have suffered from nail fungus for a lot less time had these resources been available to me. Even though my mother’s a naturopathic doctor, she still didn’t have all the answers when it came to curing nail fungus. I learned a lot during my journey to healthy nails; that’s why I got involved with toenail-fungus.org.  To educate people about safe, natural ways that they can get rid of their nail fungus has become something of a passion for me. I hope you will benefit from the information that we’ve collected. Thanks for taking the time to read this article.
