I don’t know about you but I suffer from a lot of sinus problems due to an over-reactive immune system. Immune system problems run on both sides of my family so I was kind of doomed to be an infection magnet. Whether it’s food, chemicals, pollen, dust, mold or pet dander, you better believe my immune system is going after it like the plague.
No worries though. When I feel that dreaded sore throat, fatigue, and achy feeling coming on, I reach for a few natural ingredients I buy at the grocery store and kiss that cold goodbye!
The Garlic and Honey Natural Cure for Colds
Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make this natural cold remedy:
Organic Garlic – Garlic is one of the best natural antibiotics you can buy. Its strong antibacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties are due to the chemical compound allicin. Chopping, mincing, and crushing the garlic releases this natural chemical to help stop colds before they start.
Fresh Oregano Leaves – Speaking of natural antibiotics, oregano is amazing. I’ve used pure oregano oil in water to cure sinus infections before and it works like a charm! For sensitive stomachs or for those on a tight budget, fresh oregano leaves work just as well. Oregano contains potent phenols called carvacrol and thymol that work together to offer a powerful antibacterial punch!
Cayenne Pepper – One of my favorite spices, cayenne pepper is great for colds because of its anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties.Cayenne also helps open up blocked nasal passages and gets that mucus running clear again.
Cinnamon – Cinnamon is another natural anti-inflammatory with antibacterial properties. It can help loosen that tight-chest feeling often associated with a deep bronchial cold.
Natural Honey – Despite what you’ve been led to believe, all honey is not created equal. There are certain types of honey you should never buy because it contains no bee pollen and is just a concoction of artificial sweeteners and chemicals. Your best bet is to buy local honey from a trusted farmer or small health food store.
How to Mix This Natural Cold Remedy
First, get a cutting board and knife and mince two cloves of organic garlic. Dump the garlic into a small bowl. Next, take two stalks of fresh oregano, pull off the leaves, and drop into the bowl. Add ¼ of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper and a ¼ of a teaspoon of cinnamon. Get our your honey and pour in one tablespoon. Mix together, open wide, and swallow. Do NOT chew or you’ll have bad breath for a week. The honey should mask the taste of most of the ingredients and help it go down easy. Take this remedy twice a day for 5-7 days or until symptoms improve.
If you’re pregnant or nursing, are on blood thinners, have an ulcer or acid reflux disease, do not use this natural cold remedy without talking with your doctor. Also, if you are planning on having any kind of surgery within two weeks of the final dosage, do not take this natural cold remedy as it could increase your bleeding risk.
Natural antibiotics can be very powerful and irritate the stomach so if you have a sensitive stomach, be forewarned this cold natural remedy could cause gas, bloating, and/or diarrhea. Having said that, I have a very sensitive stomach and have had no problems using this remedy. However, I don’t suffer from acid reflux so if you do, halve the dosage and take it with plenty of water.
Do not take this natural remedy for more than 7 days in a row or if any adverse reaction occurs. If symptoms persist or become worse, see your physician. Remember, I am not a doctor or a nutritionist, I’m just a natural health enthusiast who has used this remedy successfully in the past.
Natural antibiotics can help you beat a cold or flu without ever needing to see the doctor. This can be especially helpful for people with overactive immune systems and stomach problems because overuse of prescription antibiotics may only make things worse. This cold and flu season, stock up on some natural antibiotics like garlic and oregano and stay healthy all winter long!
