We all get headaches. It is just a part of life. Some headaches are caused by stress, some are caused by hormone imbalances, and some are even a side effect of medication. To combat these headaches we usually end up popping a few painkillers. However, there is a more natural approach to getting rid of headaches. Here are some things you might try before reaching for the pill bottle:

Hydrate – Sometimes a headache can be caused by lack of water intake. If you have been working out or just moving around and have not been drinking enough fluids then you could be dehydrated. Coffee and caffeinated drinks do not count! In fact, caffeine can make you more dehydrated because it is a natural diuretic. When in doubt, drink more water!

Relax –Sometimes a headache is caused by stress. Even a few minutes away from your desk can help. Relax and close your eyes. Go somewhere quiet and peaceful. You can even go on a walk to get your body moving and some of the built up stress out of your system. Nature is a known stress reliever, so try to get outside for just a minute or two. It will help a lot.

Meditate –Sometimes the stress cannot be relived with a short break. Instead, try meditation. This concentrated period of relaxation and stress-free time might be just what your body and brain need to let go of the pain and regain your peace.

Sleep –We are all guilty of not getting enough sleep. We have so much to do and so little time to do it in that sleep is often sacrificed. If you do not get the recommended eight hours of sleep per night, this exhaustion can show up as a headache. Without enough sleep, your body cannot process out the toxins you consume, so they are still running around your bloodstream and causing problems. If you can’t get more sleep at night, then take a nap. A twenty minute nap can restore and refresh your body. Do not sleep too long or you will wake up drowsy, but a short cat nap is good for anyone of any age.

Herbal Oils – There are many scents that can help to relive headaches. The best therapeutic essential oils for headaches are French lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus. Other oils that some people find to help headaches include basil, roman chamomile, lemongrass, and marjoram. To use these oils you can sniff them directly from the bottle, mix them with your favorite unscented lotion and massage into your temples, or use in a warm or cold compress. To make a compress with essential oils, add a few drops of oil to your water and then dip the cloth in it. Wring out until damp and place on your forehead across your eyes, or on the back of your neck.

Massage –If your headache is due to muscles stiffness or tightness, mostly caused by stress or issues like TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder) where the muscles around the joint in the jaw seize up, then massage can work wonders. There are several pressure points you can gently push on in a circular motion: slightly behind and below the ears at the soft part, directly in front of  the ear canal, the temples, above the bridge of the nose, and over the sinuses. It may take some time and make sure you massage both sides evenly. Sometimes a headache or other pain is reflexive, meaning it hurts on one side but the source of the pain is on the other side.

Hopefully these tips will help you to get rid of your next headache in a natural, healthy way. Remember that you do not always have to reach for the pill bottle. Sometimes the answer is as simple as closing your eyes and taking a break.
