Are You Allergic to Your Home?
Have you ever found yourself asking, “What could I be allergic to?” If so, you’re not alone. Millions of people just like you suffer from environmental allergies they’re not even aware of. Believe it or not, chronic sinusitis, neurological ticks and tremors, and behavioral issues are not normal. Are you allergic to your house or the products therein?
Signs You’re Allergic to Your House
If you’re allergic to your home, you’ll notice symptoms seem to be a lot worse after you’ve been home for a while. This means your symptoms may show up within an hour of being home but be much less severe when you’re at work or out on the town. They may also be especially bad when you’re cleaning, doing laundry or making the bed.
Common symptoms of environmental allergies include:
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Muscle Aches
- Itchy Eyes
- Post-Nasal Drip
- Itchy Nose
- Runny Nose
- Nasal Congestion
- Sneezing
- Autoimmune Disease
When Environmental Allergies Cause Mystery Symptoms
You may already know that ragweed and pollen set off your allergic symptoms in the spring and summer. But are indoor allergies causing mystery symptoms year-round?
Here is a list of the most common indoor allergies:
- Dust
If you’re allergic to dust, you’re actually allergic to dust mites. They’re tiny arachnids that are undetectable to the naked eye. Symptoms of dust mite allergy include sneezing, watery eyes, post-nasal drip, itchy eyes, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness.
- Mold
Even if you keep your bathroom and kitchen quite clean, you could still have undetected mold in your home. Mold can grow and thrive in any damp, dark environment including walls, ceilings, and floors that have been exposed to flooding. Mold allergy symptoms include coughing, wheezing, tight chest, sneezing, headaches, and feelings of general malaise.
- Household Cleaning Products
If dust and mold aren’t a problem in your house, your mystery symptoms could still be caused by your household cleaning products and detergents. Conventional cleaning products contain harsh chemicals and endocrine disruptors that can lead to depressed immune system and autoimmune disease.
Unlike typical allergy symptoms such as sneezing and runny nose, exposure to household cleaning products can cause asthma, skin rashes, headaches, twitching, tremors, and even infertility. Exposure to air fresheners affect not only the health of your immune system, it can also lead to mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and irritability. Brain fog and learning difficulties can also be directly related to chemical cleaning and freshening products used throughout the home.
- Flooring
If you’ve recently had new flooring installed in your home, the chemicals contained therein could cause you to suddenly be allergic to your home. Many types of flooring contain heavy metals and hormone-mimicking chemicals called phthalates that can lead to autoimmune disease, multiple chemical sensitivities, headaches, wheezing, asthma, and neurological problems.
- Mattresses
A new mattress can be another cause of environmental allergies. New mattresses contain petroleum-based chemicals, plastics, flame retardants, and foams that can trigger severe allergic reaction and autoimmune disease. Memory foam mattresses and pillows have become very popular in the past decade. Unfortunately, so have the negative reactions from them. Hives, swollen lips, morning cough, flu-like symptoms, profuse sweating, and sore joints are common indicators of a foam mattress allergy.
How to Cut Down on Environmental Allergens in Your Home
The best way to find out if you’re allergic to your home is to figure out what, specifically, in your home you’re allergic to. If you suspect it’s dust, you might consider investing in hypoallergenic flooring to replace your wall-to-wall carpet. Dust and vacuum weekly while wearing a protective face mask. If you can, buy an air purifier or two for your home.
A solution of baking soda and water can be used to clean mold and mildew in your home without resorting to harsh chemicals. Keeping the door open a crack when showering or turning on a fan can also cut down on mold build-up.
Switching to natural household cleaning products, detergents, make-up, and personal grooming products can also go a long way in cutting down on your allergies.
When purchasing new floors or mattresses, do your research first. Be sure your selection is hypoallergenic and as chemical-free as possible.
Once you figure out what in your home you could be allergic to, your symptoms should start to subside. You can do this by process of elimination or book an appointment with an allergist to see what’s causing your symptoms.
Supplements such as stinging nettles, quercetin, vitamin C, and zinc can help cut down on your allergic symptoms while you’re narrowing it down.
No matter what type of mystery symptom you’re suffering from, if you stick with it, you can figure out what’s causing it and live a much healthier, happier life!

This is important information. So many people are sick and it’s because of the environment they’re living in.
Very true. Thank you for your comment!
Chlorine added to your municipal water often causes the same skin and respiratory symptoms as allergies, and continually does the most damage, if you don’t filter out the chlorine. Chlorine added to municipal water supplies releases a lot of chlorine in a hot shower. And in that enclosed space your exposure is greatest through your lungs, and this is a prime cause of asthma. My asthma symptoms vanished completely when I got a whole house water filtration system, the PureMaster V-700 whole house system. It not only takes care of chlorine, but it also filters out heavy metals, and other contaminants, including – chloramines, cysts, copepods, VOCs, atrazine, benzene, xylene, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides. It had a great price for its large capacity.
Thanks for your input, David. I appreciate it.
