I Told You I Was Sick

Is Your Probiotic Healthy?

Posted by admin on February 18, 2013 in Digestive Health with 3 Comments

Something has really been irritating me about probiotics lately and that’s the fact they’ve become popular. All of a sudden my favorite horror movie scream queen (Jamie Lee Curtis) is selling probiotic yogurt and telling everyone they should regulate their digestive systems.

Good advice.

I just wish the stuff didn’t contain so many unhealthy preservatives like fructose, aspartame, malic acid, and sodium citrate.

Are Probiotics Safe?

The same thing goes for probiotic supplements. They’re all the rage and since they’re healthy for you and have a commercial for them, I become instantly suspicious and checked out the ingredients.

I didn’t like what I saw at all. First of all, Align, the probiotic supplement in question, offers a guarantee of only 1 colony forming unit of probiotic, which is less than you’d find in a cup of yogurt. Second, it contains unnecessary chemical additives that can pose a serious hazard to your health.

Three in particular really stood out to me:

  • Magnesium Stearate

Research has shown that magnesium stearate, also called stearic acid, can suppress your immune system and destroy cellular function. Oftentimes, stearic acid comes from a genetically engineered source, which means each time you take a dietary supplement containing this ingredient, you’re also swallowing pesticides.

  • Propyl Gallate

This dangerous additive has been shown to cause liver damage, skin irritation, asthma attacks, kidney damage, and cancer.

  • Titanium Dioxide

The CanadianCenter for Occupational Health declared titanium dioxide a carcinogen in 2006.

Dangerous Side Effects of Probiotics

After reading that, you might be asking yourself, “Are probiotics safe?” Yes but only if you’re taking the right kind. It’s amazing how even products that are supposed to be healthy for you contain hidden ingredients designed to give you what you’re trying to prevent or cure. If you continue to take dietary supplements that contain dangerous chemical additives, you’ll actually be making yourself sicker in the long run.

Take Probiotics without Artificial Ingredients

Probiotics are great for your health. They can improve your digestion, boost your immune system, and even help you lose weight. If you really want to regulate your digestive system, start reading labels. Avoid any yogurt containing artificial additives or ingredients (I eat Chobani Greek yogurt myself) and make sure the probiotic you’re taking is safe. Before I started making my own milk kefir at home, I took Solaray Multidophilus for years.

Don’t be fooled by clever commercials. Chances are, if there is a commercial for a food product or a dietary supplement, it’s not healthy for you. Read food and supplement labels all the time. You’ll be amazed at how many unhealthy additives you’ve been putting into your body.

I love that you are highlighting this issue. It’s kind of ironic that it is the people who actually care about their health who get swindled by these marketing deceptions. It’s also so unnecessary since companies wanting to target the health crowd could simply offer a truly healthy product. (As some actually do.) Also, I did not know about stearic acid/magnesium stearate coming from a GE source. Thanks for the info!
