“Your body’s ability to heal is greater than anyone has ever permitted you to believe.” – Mo Rosati
Last weekend I saw a great movie called “The Living Matrix” and it inspired me to write about the connection between spiritual lessons and chronic illness. “The Living Matrix” is a movie that brings quantum physics and spiritual healing together in a cohesive, easy-to-understand way. If you suffer from any type of chronic condition, watching this movie will help you change your approach to healing.
Chronic Illness – Going Beyond “Why Me”?
Anyone living with chronic illness is bound to be depressed, anxious, and down-right pissed off every once in the while. And why not? Your body doesn’t work as it was designed to. You’re suffering. There’s nothing wrong with curling up into a ball and crying or punching a pillow for an emotional release. That’s healthy.
But if you remain in that feeling, it can very quickly turn into a negative pattern that keeps you mired in despair. When you believe your illness is untreatable and your situation hopeless, your chronic illness remains in your life.
It’s all about the Law of Attraction. If you’ve never heard of the Law of Attraction, the idea is simple: What you think about, you bring about.
Why Would I “Bring About” This Illness?
This is a common question I get from people when I talk about the Law of Attraction. “Why the heck would I bring about illness into my life?”
My personal belief is that in order to heal any type of chronic illness, you must find the lesson in it. Cleaning up your diet, detoxifying your home, taking supplements, and releasing stress is only part of what you need for total wellness. You need to figure out what unconscious lesson lies just beneath the surface.
In the movie, “The Living Matrix”, a woman who desperately wanted children found that she was unable to conceive. Medical tests revealed her hormones were in fluctuation due to a tumor in her brain. She knew it had to be more than a coincidence that though she so badly wanted to start a family, she had a disease that made her unable to do so.
After careful soul searching, she realized that she had a secret fear of motherhood due to unresolved childhood trauma. Suddenly, instead of thinking about “fighting” or “killing” the brain tumor as she had been doing, she came to a place of acceptance. Within months of completely accepting her illness and resolving her past trauma, tests revealed her tumor had completely healed!
Accepting Your Illness is the First Step to Healing
I remember the day I got the phone call that I had skin cancer. It was 2007 and my doctor told me that I had melanoma and needed surgery. I was amazed by the peace that suddenly washed over me. I don’t know why but I completely accepted it.
Yes, I was scared. I also couldn’t understand why, at the age of 27, I had this illness. (Especially when I wasn’t a sunbather). But there was this underlying acceptance. I just knew that I was going to be okay.
I just knew that if I found the spiritual lesson in it, I would grow out of the unconscious need to attract serious illness into my life. So I got centered, had the surgery, dealt with the physical pain, and the possibility the cancer could spread. I allowed myself to feel what I was feeling. For two weeks, I did nothing but watch movies, nurture my inner child with coloring books, visit with friends, and reevaluate my life.
I got back on my spiritual path and started to write about my experience and other illnesses I had suffered. Up until that point, I had only shared my health struggles with a handful of people. I had a sudden thought that if I shared my story, maybe I could help others.
I wrote an article about the dangerous chemicals in sunless tanning cream and warned others not to use it. I learned a lesson in vanity. For 15 years, I’d been using dangerous sunless tanning products on my skin because I was picked on for being pale. I was ashamed of my own skin. No wonder it had started to turn on me!
I also learned how to slow down and appreciate every single little moment of my life. I cut out the negative people and situations around me and in less than one year, my entire life had changed for the better.
What’s Your Spiritual Lesson?
No matter what kind of chronic illness (or acute illness) you’re facing, stop for a moment and take a few deep breaths. Allow yourself to think for just a few minutes that this illness is part of a bigger plan. You attracted this into your life in order to learn a lesson. Close your eyes and let your consciousness travel from your head to your toes, noting each place in your body that feels pain.
Where is that pain really coming from?
Oftentimes, unresolved childhood trauma manifests itself in physical pain. A stressful job situation could lead to chronic headaches and back pain that keeps you out of work. Unexplained knee pain might mean you need to walk away from a certain situation or person in your life. Perhaps the lesson is as simple as your body is telling you that you need to clean up your diet and take better care of the temple you live in.
I have found that in any negative situation, if you look for the lesson, the situation resolves itself that much more quickly. There’s no need to continually attract more physical or emotional pain if the lesson has been learned.
Once you begin to see chronic illness as an opportunity for spiritual growth, you’re in control. The disease or illness will no longer have you in its grips and you’ll begin to heal, sometimes miraculously. If you need a bit more proof, watch “The Living Matrix”.
