Treat Urethritis in Women Naturally

If your urethra hurts but your doctor can find nothing wrong with you, you’re not alone. A lot of women suffer in silence during painful intercourse they can’t wait to get over with. Painful sex doesn’t have to rule your life, especially if it’s caused by non-specific urethritis. You can treat it naturally with a few dietary and lifestyle changes as well as natural remedies.

Urethritis – The Autoimmune and Asperger’s Connection

As a woman who has been self-diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome since 2007, I’m beginning to understand that my life-long struggle with myriad seemingly-unrelated health issues were all connected. Regardless of whether or not you’re on the spectrum, women with any type of autoimmune or chronic pain condition (especially those related to the gut like celiac disease or ulcerative colitis) are at increased risk for developing non-specific urethritis.

This is because virtually all disease begins in the gut. Digestive disorders and food allergies mean chronic inflammation and malabsorption of nutrients. If your body is unable to successfully digest food and assimilate nutrients, it can cause inflammation in other parts of your body than just your stomach and intestines. Many with chronic digestive inflammation also experience vulvar pain and discomfort.

Poor digestion and the inability to metabolize oxidant compounds called oxalates can contribute to the development of vulvar pain. An inability to properly metabolize oxalates is often associated with autism spectrum disorders. (I’ll talk about these a little later in this article).

Clean Your Feminine Area Naturally

If you’re living with urethra pain and you’ve been told you don’t have a UTI or an STD, your irritation could be caused, in part, by the soaps and feminine products you use. Instead of using harsh, store-bought soaps to cleanse your feminine area, use natural soap products instead. Castile soap is a good natural choice. Don’t douche or use scented sprays down there either. It only makes things worse.

Tampons and pads can also worsen urethritis because they contain bleach derivatives and synthetic chemicals. Switch to natural alternatives instead. I use Natracare all-natural cotton tampons
and pads and highly recommend them.

Use Essential Oils for Quick Pain Relief

Essential oils can go a long way in relieving the pain and discomfort of chronic urethritis naturally. Clove, eucalyptus, and wintergreen oils all act as natural analgesics that can numb the area during intercourse while providing antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral benefits.

A mixture of pine, thyme, and eucalyptus mixed together in a warm, shallow bath can also ease symptoms. Chamomile essential oil is a natural anti-inflammatory that can be used directly on the area to sooth and relieve.

Important Note: Essential oils are highly volatile and can irritate your skin so take care to use only one drop to try when putting them on such a delicate area. You can try putting one drop of clove oil on a Q-tip and placing it directly on your urethra. Hold it there for 60 seconds to numb the area. If it’s not enough, try two drops. If it’s too much, use a bit of coconut oil to instantly relieve any burning sensations. Discontinue use if further irritation or allergic reaction results.

Achieve Natural pH Balance

When your body is too acidic, it can lead to the development of urethritis. Get some pH testing strips from your local health food store or purchase them online. If you find your pH is too acid, you can balance it by educing the amount of junk food in your diet and investing in healthier fare. Organic cruciferous vegetables, avocado, cucumbers, bean sprouts, coconut, and cayenne pepper alkalize your body naturally.

Try a Low-Oxalate Diet

Oxalates are highly-reactive molecules abundant in plant foods and human cells. If they are present in high amounts, they can lead to oxidative damage and will trigger your immune system to cause the inflammatory pain of urethritis. Urethritis is often caused by the formation of oxalate crystals not properly metabolized by your body during the digestive process. If your gut is not healthy and you have poor fat digestion, excess oxalates can build up in your gut and crystallize in your urethra, causing pain.

Meanwhile, since the diet can be a bit of a hassle to follow (especially if you already have a ton of food restrictions like I do), you might want to first try some supplements that have been proven to reduce oxalate levels in your body.

These supplements include:

  • Probiotics – Probiotics containing lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium lactis have been shown to contain enzymes that degrade oxalates.
  • Calcium Citrate – Calcium citrate has been shown to reduce oxalate absorption from your intestines.
  • N-Acetyl Glucosamine – Stimulates the production of intercellular cement hyaluronic acid, which reduces urethral pain caused by oxalates.
  • Chondroitin Sulfate – A natural anti-inflammatory, chondroitin sulfate prevents the formation of oxalate crystals.
  • Vitamin B6 – Reduces oxalate production and fights inflammation.

In addition, if your digestion is compromised and you’re living with the symptoms of autoimmune disease, a gluten-free diet might be your best bet in easing inflammation. Try it for 6-8 weeks to see if your symptoms subside.

You don’t have to just suffer with urethral pain. If you already have any type of autoimmune or chronic pain condition that directly affects your gut and metabolism, it could be a cause of your discomfort. These tips can help improve your digestion and ease inflammation so sex is comfortable and enjoyable again.
